First President of the International Criminal Court
Justice Kirsch led the negotiations to create the International Criminal Court—the first permanent judicial authority to try individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. He was one of the first judges appointed to this court, in addition to being the first President of the International Criminal Court inaugurated in The Hague in 2003.
