Montreal Summer School

North American Law Study Program

You’re a law student and want to learn about North American Law in a fun and multicultural setting? The Faculty of Law is happy to welcome students from all over the world to attend the 12th edition of its Summer School.

Over the course of 2 weeks, you will tackle various aspects of the Canadian judicial system with leading scholars and experts, in addition to visiting important legal and political institutions of the province of Quebec and Canada.

You will arrive in Montreal in a festive environment, as Canada Day celebrations will take place for July 1st. From July 2nd to July 12th, you will have 9 days devoted to academic learning. The evenings and the weekend will be free so you can take advantage of all that the vibrant and culturally rich city of Montreal has to offer!

Program

Program includes 33 hours of courses*

  • Introduction to Canadian Legal System
  • Canadian Constitutional Law
  • Canadian Constitutional Law 2 – Human Rights
  • Canadian Criminal Law
  • Canadian Administrative Law
  • North American Trade Law
  • Introduction to U.S. Law
  • Canadian Business Law
  • Sustainable Development in Canada
  • Law and Economics
  • Quebec Civil Law and Canadian Bijuralism

Outings included

  • Visit of the Montreal Court House
  • Visit of a law firm
  • Day trip to Ottawa: visit of the Senate and Supreme Court

Academic requirements

In order to register, student must have completed at least one year of studies in a law program outside of Canada.

A transcript showing the courses completed in a law program will be required.

Language requirements

As English is the language of instruction, students who are not currently attending an English-language institution are expected to demonstrate that they have a sufficient knowledge of English prior to the program. This can be done by providing a transcript demonstrating previous courses followed in English, a language certificate from the home university, or results of an internationally recognized test.

  • Certificate demonstrating level B2 of the Common European Framework (CEFR)
  • IELTS: minimum score of 6.5 in all categories
  • TOEFL: 90 overall

Evaluation

There will be 2 exams, in the form of quizzes. The grading scale used is Pass/Fail. Participants will receive a certificate during the closing ceremony.

Housing

Housing is not included, but we have secured a special rate at the Université de Montréal residences, a 15-minute walk from the classrooms.

  • Solo rooms: 47$ CAD per night per room (plus taxes)
  • Flexo rooms: 59$ CAD per night per room (plus taxes)
  • Special rates also available for other rooms

Rooms are available on a first come first serve basis and must be booked by each student. We will provide you with the code to benefit from the advantageous rate upon reception of the payment of the deposit.

Should you need a visa to come to Canada, we recommend that you apply as soon as possible in order to fulfill all the administrative requirements.

Visa

Depending on your country of citizenship, you will either need a visa to enter Canada or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA). To find out which document is required, consult the Canadian government webpage.
