Biography
Thérèse Leroux has been a Full Professor and a researcher at the Université de Montréal’s Centre de recherche en droit public (CRDP) since 2000. While in detachment from 2001 to 2003, she was director of the ethics committee for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In 2003, she was a special consultant to the President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for a major dossier looking at the inappropriate use of placebos during clinical trials in Canada.
In addition to her law degrees, Professor Leroux has earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, a Certificate in Psychology of Human Relations from the Université de Sherbrooke and a PhD in medical biochemistry from Université Laval. She is also a member of the Ordre des chimistes du Québec and the Barreau du Québec.
As a researcher studying biomedical innovations and a member of the broader community, Thérèse Leroux is interested in judicial and ethical questions related to testing of new medications on human subjects, organ transplants (allograft and xenotransplantation), zoonosis and public health, protecting the public from biotechnological products and conserving biodiversity.
Over the next year, her work will focus on one of three themes: Genomics and society, specifically, the rights and obligations of researchers as it concerns sharing and retaining information; xenotransplantation as a model for demonstrating the opposition of individual rights and public health; and, state powers and responsibilities in the face of uncertainties over questions relating to the environment and public health.
