Absence for an exam

Procedure – Justifying an absence

Students who miss an exam must explain their absence as soon as they can report it by completing the CHE_Absence_Évaluation form in their Student Centre and attaching supporting documents. Students have one week after the exam to provide the documentation.

The undergraduate student regulations note in paragraph 9.9 “Supporting documents must be duly dated and signed. If applicable, a medical certificate should indicate the activities the student is unable to take part in because of their health and the date and duration of the absence; it must also identify the physician.” The graduate and post-doctoral academic regulations note in paragraph 30 “Valid reason means a reason independent of the student’s will, such as force majeure or an illness attested to by a medical certificate.” 

Absence from a midterm exam: if the Vice-Dean of Program Administration deems the reasons for the absence acceptable, the percentage of the midterm exam will be added to the final evaluation.

Absence from a final exam: if the Vice-Dean of Program Administration deems the reason for the absence acceptable, students will be required to take a deferred exam. Deferred exams normally take place at the beginning of the following session.

Authorized materials

During an in-class exam or while consulting an exam, the possession of any material that uses computer technology or that enables communication, the reproduction of sound, or the reproduction of images is prohibited (computers, phones or mobile terminals (BlackBerry), digital players (iPod), recorders, cameras, etc.).

During exams, students may have in their possession only educational materials authorized by the professor (collections, class notes, codes, etc.). This material is identified on the questionnaire cover sheet.

Identification code in law (CID) (law ID)

The CID (code d'indentification en droit) is assigned by the Faculty of Law to all students for the duration of their bachelor studies.* The sole purpose of the CID is to ensure the papers professors or correctors grade are anonymous. We recommend students enter their CID on their student card as soon as they receive it.

CIDs are sent to students by email at their institutional address (

Students must enter their CID on exam manuscripts instead of their name. Use of the CID is mandatory both for in-class exams and for take-home exams.

* A CID is also assigned to anyone registered in at least one DRT course without being a student in the Bachelor of Laws (independent student, student admitted to another program, visiting student).

Checking schedules

It is important to properly verify the midterm and final exam schedules for each session: date; time; exam room number.

When students arrive in the exam room, they must have a valid student card and C.I.D. in their possession.

Handing in exam manuscripts

When a member of personnel responsible for in-class exam invigilation advises students that the exam is over, students must immediately hand in their exam manuscript. If students delay handing the manuscript in, it may be considered INADMISSIBLE.

Communication by e-mail

Whether for an individual or group message, email is the preferred means for the Faculty to contact students. The Faculty sends messages to the institutional address students receive upon admission to the Faculty of Law (e.g.:

Nevertheless, throughout your studies, it is important to check the personal email address you provided upon your admission. This address may be used if needed (e.g.: a change of provider).

Awards and scholarship competitions

The Faculty grants awards and scholarships to students to reward merit and excellence.

Most scholarships are offered in the fall and winter sessions. An email is sent to all students registered when the competition opens.

Recording classes

For a number of years, the schedule for Bachelor of Laws courses has been organized to leave Friday afternoon free. This is in part to allow for classes to be rescheduled.

Students who cannot attend a rescheduled class can listen to a sound recording of the class. To do this, students should go to the StudiUM* website and access the course platform in question.

The recording is available only for a few days after the class.

Only students registered for a course section can access StudiUM.

Université de Montréal student card

Students must present a valid student card to be admitted to exam sittings.

This requirement is indicated at the top of the exam schedule page, which is posted both on the academic bulletin board and on the Faculty website: Students must have their student card when they enter the exam room.

Exceptionally, students who do not have their card can present another piece of photo ID; within two business days of the exam, they must go to the Undergraduate Studies Secretariat with their student card to confirm their identity and registration in the course.

Before sitting the exam, students without photo ID must go to the Undergraduate Studies Secretariat to obtain a pass.

Manuscripts WILL BE REFUSED from students who write an exam without presenting their Université de Montréal student card, a piece of photo ID or a pass.


My access code is not working. What should I do?

You can access exams only for a limited time. Be sure you have the right dates for consultation. You should also ensure that exam manuscripts were scanned for your course. Consult the list (link to the Excel file). After verifying, contact us if you still cannot access your exam. See the “Contact us” section.

My exam is illegible. What should I do?

Contact us. We will correct the situation as soon as possible.
